What is the BCS exam and how NextBCS helps

The Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination, conducted by the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), is the gateway to the country's most respected government careers. It is a three-stage exam — Preliminary, Written and Viva — and every year lakhs of graduates compete for a few thousand cadre and non-cadre posts.

1 What is the BCS exam?

BCS selects officers for General, Technical and Professional cadres such as Administration, Police, Foreign Affairs, Tax, Customs, Audit and Education. Candidates first clear a 200-mark MCQ Preliminary, then a 900-mark Written examination, and finally a 200-mark Viva.

2 Who is eligible?

You must be a Bangladeshi citizen holding at least a bachelor's degree. The general age limit is 21–30 years (relaxed to 32 for freedom-fighter quota and some cadres). Always confirm the exact criteria in the official BPSC circular for the current BCS.

3 Why prepare seriously?

With 300,000+ applicants and negative marking in the Preliminary, BCS rewards consistent, syllabus-aligned practice over last-minute cramming. A clear plan across all ten subjects is what separates selected candidates from the rest.

4 How NextBCS helps

NextBCS brings the full BCS syllabus, topic-wise MCQ banks, authentic previous year questions with solutions, full-length model tests with negative marking, and an AI tutor that builds a daily study plan around your weak areas — in Bangla and English.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does BCS preparation take?

A structured plan of 6–12 months is enough for most candidates to cover the full syllabus, practise previous year questions and sit adequate mock tests. Serious daily practice matters more than the total number of months.

Is negative marking applied in the BCS Preliminary?

Yes. In the 200-mark MCQ Preliminary, 0.50 marks are deducted for each wrong answer, so accuracy and educated guessing strategy are very important.

Which subjects carry the most marks in the Preliminary?

Bangla and English carry 35 marks each and Bangladesh Affairs carries 30 marks — together nearly half of the paper. Prioritise these while keeping all subjects above the cut-off.

Can I prepare for BCS without a coaching centre?

Absolutely. With a clear syllabus, disciplined MCQ practice, previous year questions and regular mock tests, self-preparation works well. NextBCS gives you all of these in one app with an AI study plan.

How many previous year questions should I solve?

Aim to solve at least the last 10 years of BCS previous year questions. Recurring topics and question patterns become obvious, which sharply improves your Preliminary score.

Is NextBCS free to use for BCS preparation?

Yes, you can start free with daily quizzes and previous year questions. A premium plan unlocks unlimited mock tests, full analytics and advanced AI recommendations.
